Drs. Rowland S. Holsinger and Patricia E. Higgins Celebrate Practice’s

    35-Year Legacy

DENTON, MD – February is the month where we typically reflect on relationships. But for Rowland S. Holsinger, DDS, and Patricia E. Higgins, DDS, February not only provides an opportunity to celebrate their 39 year relationship as husband and wife, but also their partnership in dentistry as they celebrates the 35th anniversary of Smiles by Holsinger & Higgins, 10646 River Road, Denton.

Drs. Higgins and Holsinger met as students at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, now known as University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and were married the day after they graduated. Each went on to complete a general practice residency at different locations. Dr. Holsinger did his residency at Wilmington Medical Center and Dr. Higgins did hers at Baltimore City Hospitals. They later practiced as associate dentists in the Delmarva region.

Pat and Rowland ultimately decided to put roots down in Maryland in Dr. Holsinger’s hometown of Denton when they found out they were going to have their first child. And in February 1986, they opened a family dentistry practice by the McDonald’s Restaurant in Denton just about a mile from their current location. Although a lot has changed since their humble beginnings when they “time-shared” one dental chair, the principles that guided them when they opened their doors for the first time continue today with everlasting enthusiasm and commitment.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve been practicing long enough not only to see our own daughters grow up, but also to watch our patients’ children and grandchildren grow up, and to have the privilege to serve the dental needs of the next generation, ” says Dr. Higgins. “The world of dentistry has changed a lot over the last 35 years, but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to delivering the highest quality dental care possible,” she says.

And for Drs. Holsinger and Higgins that means taking care of all the details from seeking the most current and cutting edge education to furnishing the office with the best equipment to provide optimal service and comfort for their patients. “Although we’ve been in practice for a long time, we’ve never lost our passion for finding better ways to help our patients preserve, restore and maintain good oral health,” says Dr. Holsinger. “Our office is designed with patient comfort in mind and we make sure that our dental and professional staff are knowledgeable, compassionate and well-trained,” he adds.

For most medical professionals the day to day work of building a successful practice would be hectic enough, but not for Drs. Holsinger and Higgins. Dr. Higgins is a past president of the Eastern Shore Dental Society and Past Trustee to the Maryland State Dental Society. Currently she is serving on the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners. Dr Holsinger is also a past president of the Eastern Shore Dental Society and the Denton Rotary. He is currently serving as the treasurer to the Charitable and Educational Foundation that oversees Missions of Mercy throughout the state of Maryland, the treasurer of the Eastern Shore Dental Society and the treasurer of the Denton Church of the Brethren. He also proudly serves as the Dental Lead for the Eastern Shore Dental Mission of Mercy.

Although excellence in dentistry is definitely a trademark for Smiles by Holsinger, the practice is equally known for its generosity in the community. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a Denton or Caroline County community event that the practice doesn’t support. Among the most notable ones are the Caroline Summerfest and Flags for Heroes.

The practice also participates in Donated Dental Services, providing pro bono dental services for handicapped patients. This past year during the COVID-19 pandemic Smiles by Holsinger hosted a food drive for His Hope Ministries, a local homeless shelter. Other charitable endeavors include the annual White-A-Thon for Tuckahoe Habitat for Humanity and a Halloween candy trade-in where kids get paid for their leftover Halloween candy and the candy is shipped overseas to U.S. Troops.

“This past year was difficult,” Dr. Higgins says. “We really missed our patients when we had to close due to the pandemic. Not being able to practice dentistry even for a relatively short time reminded us just how much it’s at the heart of who we are,” she adds. And if the past 35 years are any indication, the doctors’ passion for dentistry and service will motivate them to continue to raise the bar well into the future.
