The Caroline Foundation Awards $1 Million in Grants to Local Nonprofits Supporting Health and Wellness

DENTON, MD — The Caroline Foundation proudly announced the awarding of $1,000,000 in grants to 26 nonprofit organizations serving Caroline County residents during its annual breakfast held November 6th at the Chesapeake Culinary Center.

This year, the Foundation received 33 grant applications totaling $1,658,627 by the July 1, 2025 deadline. The grants awarded support nonprofits that provide essential, health-related services—such as food access, housing assistance, mental health care, and end-of-life support—to thousands of Caroline County citizens each year. Beneficiaries include organizations such as local food banks, homeless shelters, hospices, and community programs that deliver meals for seniors, mental health counseling, and weekend food for children.

The Caroline Foundation’s mission began on July 1, 2015, following the sale of the Caroline Nursing Home and The Gables. The proceeds—approximately $14 million—were invested to create a sustainable fund to benefit the citizens of Caroline County. Over the past decade, the Foundation has received an additional $1.3 million in donations, bringing its total resources to $15.3 million.

Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed 194 grants to 45 nonprofit organizations, totaling roughly $6.8 million in funding. Through careful investment and fiscal stewardship, the Foundation has simultaneously grown its total assets to $18.6 million—ensuring it can continue to give back for generations to come.

“Our financial model is designed for perpetuity,” said a spokesperson for the Foundation’s Board of Directors. “By minimizing administrative costs and maintaining a disciplined investment strategy, we ensure that the money entrusted to us continues to grow and support the health and well-being of Caroline County residents year after year.”

The Caroline Foundation operates with no paid staff, no physical office, and no phone line, keeping annual expenses—including brokerage, accounting, administrative, legal, and insurance fees—to less than 1% of total assets. The 13 volunteer members of the Board of Directors, all Caroline County residents, manage the Foundation and partner with the Mid-Shore Community Foundation for administrative services. Their goal each year is to distribute 5% of total assets in grants to local nonprofits.

To illustrate the Foundation’s sustainability model, based on the June 20, 2025 financial results-for every $100 donated, only $0.89 is used for expenses, $5 goes directly to community grants, and $94.11 is invested. With sound investment practices and favorable market performance, that investment typically grows beyond the original donation amount within a year—allowing each contribution to make a lasting, perpetual impact.

The Caroline Foundation remains committed to improving the health and wellness of the Caroline County community. As local needs continue to grow and grant requests exceed available funds each year, the Foundation invites community members to join in its mission.
