Anna Murray Douglass: A Revolutionary Life

Join Celeste-Marie Bernier for a conversation about her groundbreaking biography, Anna Murray Douglass. Working with the Murray and Douglass families and drawing on more than 30 years of archival research, Bernier will share the remarkable story of Anna Murray Douglass. She was a freedom-fighter, activist, artist, strategist, liberator, human rights philosopher, political thinker, family builder, and wife and co-revolutionary of Frederick Douglass. She was the mother, guardian, protector, and educator of five children, all liberators in their own right: Rosetta, Lewis Henry, Frederick, Jr., Charles Remond, and Annie Douglass.
She will discuss Anna Murray Douglass's vital and transformative role in the fight for the “downfall of slavery” (Frederick Douglass), her death-defying labors as an Underground Railroad freedom-fighter, strategist, and leader, and the often-overlooked contributions of her entire family to the “struggle for the cause of liberty” (Lewis Henry Douglass).
